Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Hits Back at SGPC Criticism: "Do They Have a Copyright?"
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann vs SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami Latest News Today: A new controversy has erupted between the Punjab Government and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) over the upcoming official event commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
Reacting strongly to SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami’s criticism, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asked, “Are they (SGPC) having a copyright?” in response to the objections raised over the state government’s decision to hold a separate event.
“We will organize the event as everyone has the right to observe such occasions,” Mann asserted, defending the move as inclusive and respectful of the Sikh legacy.
Earlier, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami had taken strong exception to the state government’s announcement, accusing it of overstepping its bounds. “The SGPC, as the premier religious body of the Sikh community, is solely entitled to organize such historic centenary events, with the support of Sikh organizations and the wider sangat,” Dhami said. He emphasized that the government's role should remain limited to administrative assistance and not cross into religious functions.
Dhami further argued that only religious institutions with deep understanding of Sikh maryada (traditions) and historical sensitivities are appropriate bodies to lead such sacred observances. “There are clear precedents: every major Sikh event in history has been spearheaded by the SGPC, with governments only providing logistical support,” he added.
The sharp exchange highlights ongoing tensions between religious institutions and political leadership in Punjab, especially over the custodianship of Sikh heritage and public events of historical significance. While the SGPC sees itself as the rightful steward of Sikh commemorations, the state government argues for broader participation and inclusivity.
As both sides dig in their heels, the upcoming 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru, is now not only a sacred occasion but also the center of a growing debate over representation, authority, and tradition within Punjab’s socio-religious landscape.
