Kaur Singh started boxing in 1977

SANGRUR: Olympian boxer, Padma Shri, Arjuna awardee and Asia Gold Medalist Kaur Singh Khanal Khurd passed away at the age of 74. It is worth mentioning here that recently the Punjab government has decided to print his biography in the text books of 9th and 10th class students.

Notably, after joining the army in 1971, Kaur Singh started boxing in 1977. During the period 1979 to 1983, he won gold medals in the Senior National Boxing Championship.

Late Kaur Singh clinched six gold medals in international competitions including the 1982 Asian Games. He is the only boxer who played an exhibition match against the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in 1980. After retiring from the army as Subedar, he worked as an ASI in the Punjab Police.
