The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) will launch a dedicated cardiac emergency facility from March 1, marking an important step toward strengthening emergency cardiac care services.

The new unit fills a gap that has existed since the Advanced Cardiac Centre was set up in 2009. PGIMER Director Prof. Vivek Lal said that handling serious cardiac cases within the general emergency system of a busy tertiary care hospital had become increasingly difficult over time.

At present, patients with heart emergencies are treated in the main Emergency wing, which manages a large number of trauma, medical and surgical cases every day. The hospital receives patients from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. Due to the heavy rush, patients requiring urgent cardiac intervention sometimes face delays in the crowded emergency setup.

Prof. Lal stated that cardiovascular emergencies demand immediate attention, as every minute is crucial. He said the dedicated facility has been established through joint efforts of the Departments of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Hospital Administration and Nursing Services.

He added that the initiative is expected to ease congestion in the main Emergency wing and streamline patient flow.
