Jagmeet Singh’s support has been critical in keeping Trudeau’s minority Liberal government afloat.
Canada Politics Latest News Today: NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on Monday called for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign, stating that “all options” remain open regarding a potential non-confidence motion. Singh’s remarks come amidst growing economic pressures and internal government conflicts, reported Global News.
The demand followed the resignation of Canada’s Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, further fueling concerns over Liberal leadership. Speaking in Ottawa, Singh criticized Trudeau and his government for prioritizing internal issues over pressing concerns like rising grocery prices, housing costs, and looming US trade tariffs.
“Instead of fighting for Canadians, Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are fighting themselves,” Singh said. “For that reason, I’m calling on Justin Trudeau to resign. He has to go.”
Singh’s support has been critical in keeping Trudeau’s minority Liberal government afloat. However, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre echoed similar sentiments during the question period, accusing Trudeau of losing control. “We cannot accept this chaos and division while facing a 25 percent tariff from our closest ally,” Poilievre said, referring to the potential economic impact of US President-elect Donald Trump’s policies.
Meanwhile, House Leader Karina Gould defended the government’s stability, highlighting its recent success in confidence votes. However, an Ipsos poll released on Tuesday revealed declining Liberal support, dropping to 21 percent—a tie with the rising NDP.
As political tensions rise, the Liberal government faces the threat of collapse if it fails future confidence votes, potentially leading to a snap election ahead of the scheduled October 2025 federal election.
