Haryana: Elderly Sikh Man From Kaithal Detained In Abu Dhabi For Wearing Kirpan
Sikh Man forced to remove Turban and Kirpan in Abu Dhabi: An elderly Sikh individual from Kaithal, Haryana, India, was allegedly detained by Abu Dhabi police and forced to remove his turban and kirpan — essential articles of Sikh religious practice and identity.
The individual, identified as Dalvinder Singh, was visiting the United Arab Emirates on a tourist visa when local authorities arrested him. According to his son, who resides in Delhi, Dalvinder Singh was detained for 20 days without any explanation from the authorities.
The incident reportedly occurred when the elderly Sikh’s tour group visited the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan (BAPS) temple in Abu Dhabi. He was stopped by the police upon the sight of his kirpan and was detained despite efforts by the temple management and tour guides to explain the religious significance of the kirpan to the authorities.
A kirpan is a small curved sword or dagger carried by baptized Sikhs and is one of the five sacred articles that baptized Sikhs are required to wear at all times.
The family stated, “This was not just a personal violation; it was a blatant disregard of religious freedom.”
They have urged the Indian government to intervene and raise the matter with UAE authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from Sikh communities both within India and abroad, with demands for a formal apology and clarification from the UAE government.
Sikh organizations have also called upon the Indian government to ensure the security, uphold safety standards, and protect the dignity of Sikhs abroad.
