Meteorological Department Issues Yellow Alert for Punjab

CHANDIGARH: After a week of scorching temperatures reaching close to 42 degrees, Punjab is set to experience respite as the weather takes a turn. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for rain in the region on June 25-26, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall. This anticipated downpour is expected to bring relief from the sweltering heat, with temperatures predicted to drop to around 33 degrees.

The upcoming rainfall is attributed to the influence of the Western Disturbance, which is poised to alleviate the heatwave conditions prevalent in Punjab. Over the course of the next week until June 29, the state is expected to receive above-normal rainfall, with an average of 10 mm anticipated. However, a decrease in rainfall and a subsequent rise in temperature are projected between July 30 and August 6.

Notably, June has witnessed record-breaking rainfall in various parts of Punjab. Amritsar, in particular, recorded a staggering 109.7 mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal levels by 295%. This year, Amritsar shattered previous June rainfall records. Other notable figures include 75.2 mm in Gurdaspur, 36.1 mm in Ludhiana, 62.7 mm in Kapurthala, 36 mm in Tarn Taran, and 44.4 mm in Jalandhar.

Taking into account the entire state of Punjab, the cumulative rainfall for the month stands at 43.6 mm, exceeding the normal rainfall of 31.9 mm. This year's rainfall in Punjab has surpassed expectations, recording a significant 37% increase.

As Punjab braces for the forecasted heavy rainfall and a break from the scorching heat, residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions. The forthcoming rain showers offer much-needed relief from the prevailing heatwave and hold the promise of replenishing water resources, ultimately benefiting the agricultural landscape of the region.
