Rahul Gandhi's statement triggered sharp criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
Rahul Gandhi Controversy on Sikh Religious Freedom in India: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, who is currently on a US visit, has stirred a political controversy with his comments on religious freedom in India, specifically referencing the Sikh community, during an event in the United States.
While speaking in Herndon, Virginia, US, Rahul Gandhi Gandhi remarked, "The fight in India is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear a turban, whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a kada or go to the Gurudwara. That’s what the fight is about, and it’s not just for Sikhs, but for all religions."
His statement triggered sharp criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP national spokesperson RP Singh slammed Gandhi, reminding him of the tragic events of 1984, when thousands of Sikhs were killed in anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
"In 1984, 3,000 Sikhs were massacred in Delhi, their turbans were removed, their hair cut, and their beards shaved. He fails to mention that this occurred under Congress rule," Singh remarked.
Singh further challenged Gandhi to make similar remarks on Indian soil, threatening legal action. "I will file a case against him and drag him to court," he warned, accusing Gandhi of overlooking his party’s role in Sikh history.
