Former Karnataka Police Chief, Om Prakash, was found dead at his home in Bengaluru on Sunday, reportedly after an argument with his wife, according to NDTV.
As per the report, his wife, Pallavi, allegedly threw chilli powder at him, tied him up, and stabbed him to death. He was also reportedly attacked with a glass bottle. After committing the murder, Pallavi called the wife of another police officer and told her that she had killed her 68-year-old husband. That woman then informed her husband, who reported the incident to the police.
Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police Vikas Kumar said the police were informed about the crime around 4 pm.
Pallavi and their daughter, Kruthi, were detained and questioned for over 12 hours. Sources said that Pallavi is the prime accused in the case. The incident allegedly stemmed from a property dispute, after Om Prakash gave a piece of property to a relative, which triggered a conflict between the couple. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the daughter was also involved in the crime.
A case has been registered based on a complaint filed by Om Prakash’s son, Kartikhesh. In his complaint, he stated that both his mother and sister had been suffering from depression and had previously threatened to kill his father. Due to these threats, Om Prakash had moved to his sister Saritha Kumari’s house. However, two days before the murder, his daughter Kruthi went to bring him back home against his will.
“My mother, Mrs. Pallavi, had been threatening to kill my father, Mr. Om Prakash (Retired DGP and IGP), for the past week. Due to these threats, my father had gone to stay at the residence of his sister, Ms. Saritha Kumari. Two days ago, my younger sister Kruthi went to her house and pressured my father to return home. She brought him back against his will,” Kartikhesh said.
He added that he was not at home during the time of the murder. A neighbour called him to inform that his father was lying on the ground downstairs. “I rushed home around 5:45 pm and found police officers and members of the public at the scene. My father was lying in a pool of blood with injuries to his head and body. A broken bottle and a knife were found next to his body. He was taken to St. John’s Hospital. My mother and sister used to frequently argue with my father. I strongly suspect they are involved in his murder,” he said in the complaint.
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara was quoted as saying, “Retired Director General of Police Om Prakash has been murdered. Preliminary information indicates his wife committed the crime, but it’s under investigation. We have to wait. He worked with me when I was Home Minister in 2015—he was a good officer and a good human being. This shouldn’t have happened. The investigation will reveal everything.”
