At the root of the unimaginable public suffering stands IndiGo's failure to comply with the government's new rule.
Indigo News: Passengers continue to suffer as IndiGo Airlines’ widespread flight disruptions persist on December 6, with long queues seen at various airports across the country.
Long queues of passengers were seen at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru and at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, this morning.
A passenger, Poonam Maurya, told news agency ANI, “We had a flight to Lucknow via Patna, but it stands cancelled now. They have now assigned us a flight to Delhi scheduled for tonight at 8:45 pm. But they are also saying that there is no certainty where it would fly out… We had not received any information beforehand regarding the cancellation of the flight. They told us to either get a refund or reschedule the flight.”
As disruptions continue for the sixth straight day, the on-ground situation for passengers at the airports is devastating. Passengers include elderly citizens, children, patients, pregnant women, army personnel who need to join duty the next day, students who have interviews scheduled for the next day, and passengers with connecting flights.
Passengers with connecting flights—including both foreign and domestic travellers—are facing major trouble, with nowhere to stay in the area, as IndiGo fail to provide accommodation and information about their baggage.
As passengers with connecting flights remain stuck at a particular airport, they are unable to catch further flights, leading to losses, including financial ones.

IndiGo has also failed to provide basic necessities such as water. Passengers are forced to sit on concrete floors and even sleep there, as both the airport and the airline fail to provide facilities.
Some passengers have been searching for their baggage for the past three days, while others have been stuck at the airport for more than 24 hours.
According to reports, around 1,000 flights have been cancelled so far, and the airline has cited several reasons, including the winter season and the government’s new rule, for the historic “failure.”
At the root of the unimaginable public suffering stands IndiGo’s failure to comply with the government’s new rule.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had rolled out a new rule in January 2024 mandating more rest for pilots and crew members, and it came into force in November this year.
The airline had almost two years to adjust to the rules. However, many have alleged that it has “arm-twisted” the government into withdrawing the rule. The rule now stands in abeyance.
The airline operates over 60 percent of India’s aviation market, and many are alleging that it has exploited the rights of its pilots by making them overwork.
