The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Superintendent of Police, Jodhpur Central Jail, on a plea filed by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and seeking his release, according to ANI.
The matter has been listed for the next hearing on the coming Tuesday. Advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, appearing on behalf of Wangchuk’s wife, stated, “We will be going to Jodhpur to meet Sonam Wangchuk today.”
“In the habeas corpus petition, we were seeking permission to meet Sonam Wangchuk, ensure his access to medication, and obtain a copy of the grounds for his detention,” Khare added.
It has been reported that while the grounds of detention have been supplied to Sonam Wangchuk, they have not been served to his family.
Speaking to the media, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, said, “It was an illegal detention. He is in no way a national security threat, so he should be released immediately. The grounds of detention have not been given to us.”
She further added that when Sonam Wangchuk’s brother went to meet him at Jodhpur Jail, they could only see him through a glass partition. Therefore, she said, it would not have been possible for Wangchuk to hand over the grounds of detention to his brother even if he had received them.
