While being escorted out of the courtroom, he was heard saying, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahega Hindustan (India will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan),” said a lawyer present in the courtroom.

According to Bar and Bench, the incident unfolded when the Bench led by the CJI was hearing the mentioning of cases by lawyers.

According to sources cited in its news report, the lawyer went near the dais and attempted to remove his shoe and throw it at the judge.

However, security personnel present in court intervened just in time and escorted the lawyer out.

The CJI remained calm and composed and asked the lawyers present in court to continue with their arguments.

"Don't get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me," the CJI is quoted as saying in the report.

The news noted that the incident was possibly due to the CJI’s comments in a previous case related to the restoration of a 7-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho.

“Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archaeological site and ASI needs to give permission etc,” the CJI stated while dismissing that case.

His observation, as reported in the news, has caused an uproar on social media, with many accusing the CJI of hurting religious sentiments.
Two days later, while addressing the controversy, the CJI said, “I respect all religions... This happened on social media.”

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central government, had backed the CJI, stating, "We have seen this... There is Newton's law which says every action has equal reaction, but now every action has disproportionate social media reaction, milord."
