David Warner, Australia's vice-captain, insists his team has not suffered an Ashes hangover as after a dominant 4-0 Ashes triumph, a lacklustre Australia was unable to defend 305 in game one of the five-match series at the MCG.
The match was held just six days after Australia reclaimed the
much-hyped Ashes series.
Warner believed Australia deserved to celebrate the Ashes triumph in
style but said the team had shifted their focus to the ODI series.
"It's irrelevant about an Ashes series. We always come to this time of the year after playing a long series. No matter what series it is, we're up and about," Warner said. "We're playing another game for Australia, it's what we grew up wanting to do."
Coming into the ODI series in sizzling form, Warner made just 2 and fell
to a vicious short ball from England speedster Mark Wood, who did not
play in the Ashes.
Warner said that Wood always up in the high 140s (kmph), I expect nothing less from him, he's always been an aggressive bowler. "But there's no excuse from a batting perspective, we should be 'on' all the time," he added.
Australia's chances of squaring the series have suffered a setback with illness striking wicketkeeper Tim Paine and quick Josh Hazlewood, who was rested from game one. With paceman Pat Cummins having a breather, uncapped West Australian quick Jhye Richardson will make his debut if Hazlewood misses.
