Pakistan Opts to Bowl as ICC Champions Trophy Kicks Off latest news: Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and chose to bowl first against Mitchell Santner’s New Zealand in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday.
As we report, Pakistan has already taken three wickets, and the 21st over is currently being played. New Zealand has scored 93 runs so far, with Will Young and Tom Latham at the crease while Shaheen Afridi is bowling.
Pakistan's bowlers made an early impact by taking key wickets, giving their team an advantage over New Zealand. New Zealand was at 39 runs for 1 wicket, but after Pakistan's breakthrough, they slipped to 40 runs for 2 wickets.
Abrar Ahmed bowled cleverly and outfoxed Devon Conway, dismissing him after he scored 10 runs in the 8th over. In the very next over (9th over), Naseem Shah took the wicket of Kane Williamson, further weakening New Zealand's batting lineup.
The Champions Trophy 2025 began with the inaugural match between Pakistan and New Zealand at 2:00 PM Pakistan Standard Time (PST).
Tournament Structure:
The Champions Trophy features eight top cricketing nations, divided into two groups:
Group A: Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Bangladesh
Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, Afghanistan
Matches are scheduled across Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi (Pakistan), and Dubai (UAE). Due to political tensions, India’s matches will be held in Dubai instead of Pakistan.
The tournament will run from February 19 to March 9, 2025, culminating in the final match in Lahore. However, if India qualifies for the final, it will be relocated to Dubai.
