Union Home Minister Amit Shah Unveils SSB Border Projects in Bihar, Signals Action on Infiltration
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple infrastructure projects of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) at Border Outposts Leti and Indarwa in the Araria district of Bihar, reaffirming the Centre’s focus on strengthening border security along the India–Nepal frontier. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a central armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, was established in 1963 and is tasked with guarding India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
Addressing SSB personnel and residents of nearby villages, the Home Minister stressed the importance of constant vigilance along the open India–Nepal border. While noting the friendly relations between the two countries, he said security agencies must remain alert against potential misuse of the open border by anti-national elements.
Shah emphasised the need to enhance intelligence gathering through stronger coordination between security forces and local communities in border areas, calling community cooperation vital for timely information sharing.
Announcing a focused campaign against infiltration in the Seemanchal region, the Home Minister said the initiative would include measures to curb illegal encroachments within 10 kilometres of the international border and action against individuals found to be residing illegally.
He said that infiltration poses challenges to national security and can impact access to welfare schemes and public resources. Referring to concerns over demographic changes in certain regions, Shah said border management would remain a priority for the government.
The Home Minister also expressed confidence that stricter border management measures, including fencing and surveillance, would be strengthened in neighbouring states such as West Bengal in the future.
