Ravichandran Ashwin Retires from International Cricket After Stellar Career

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin Retirement Amid Border Gavaskar Trophy Australia Series: Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India's greatest all-rounders, has immediately announced his retirement from international cricket. The announcement came at the conclusion of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane.

“This will be my last year as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” Ashwin stated at a press conference. “I feel there’s still a bit of cricket left in me, but I wish to channel that energy into club-level cricket.”

Ashwin reflected on his journey with gratitude. “I’ve had a fantastic time on the field, creating memories with Rohit [Sharma] and many of my teammates, though it’s bittersweet as some have retired over the years. We can proudly call ourselves the last of the OGs. I’d also like to thank the BCCI and my teammates for their unwavering support.”

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets at an average of 24 across 106 matches, trailing only Anil Kumble’s record of 619 wickets. Additionally, Ashwin’s batting achievements include 3503 Test runs, six centuries, and 14 fifties, placing him among the elite group of 11 all-rounders with over 3000 runs and 300 wickets.

Ashwin’s illustrious career includes a record-equalling 11 Player-of-the-Series awards, a feat shared with the legendary Muthiah Muralidaran.

Despite his exceptional record, Ashwin had not been a consistent feature in India’s overseas Test XI in recent years. He played only one Test in the current Border-Gavaskar series, taking 1 for 53 in Adelaide. With India’s next home series scheduled after an away tour of England, Ashwin would have been 39 years old by then, likely influencing his decision.

Ashwin’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched skill, resilience, and dedication to Indian cricket.
