Rs 3.5 Cr Indoor Volleyball Stadium at SCD College: Ludhiana’s Roadmap to Becoming a Sports Hub
Ludhiana is set for a major infrastructure boost with the development of an indoor volleyball stadium at SCD Government College, estimated to cost Rs 3.5 crore. Experts claim this will be the first facility of its kind in North India, providing a professional indoor environment for a sport typically played in the open due to a lack of infrastructure.
Gurjot Singh, a national-level coach and member of the Ludhiana Volleyball Association, said that while the college has trained nearly 100 national-level players over the last decade, this facility will be a "huge boost" for athletes, 90% of whom come from rural backgrounds.
The upcoming stadium will feature wooden flooring, a soundproof hall, modern lighting, a gymnasium, and a conference room. Additionally, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu has offered to absorb nine high-performing players from the recent national championship into the Railways.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said that around Rs 10 crore is being invested to develop Ludhiana as a sports hub. Other projects in the pipeline include the revamping of Shastri Badminton Hall, an expansion of the weightlifting centre at GNN Stadium, and a new synthetic lawn tennis court. Jain emphasised that the administration aims to complete several of these projects within the next six months to channelise the youth towards sports.
