The Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner (DC) has directed that the widening of the service lane on the stretch from Hallomajra to the Zirakpur light point, along with the construction of a cycle track on Purv Marg, must be completed by March 31. The directive aims to ease traffic congestion and promote non-motorised transport.

During a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, the DC emphasised the implementation of corrective measures at identified fatal road crash sites. The meeting saw active participation from the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), alongside key representatives from all relevant stakeholder departments, ensuring a coordinated approach to the agenda.

Discussions focused on engineering interventions, including road geometry improvement, installation of adequate signage, and traffic-calming measures. The DC stressed the urgency of providing dedicated infrastructure for cyclists to reduce conflict points among different road users and encourage eco-friendly travel.

The meeting, which included the Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), also addressed the need to expedite the installation of protective grills on the road median at Sector 29/30 to prevent unauthorised pedestrian crossings.

Departments have been ordered to maintain close coordination and submit periodic progress reports for effective monitoring of the ongoing safety initiatives.
