On Monday, two-time Olympic medallist and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra announced that he has launched his own athlete management firm, Vel Sports, after parting ways with JSW Sports following a decade-long association. This move marks a new phase in his career.

Chopra had been associated with JSW Sports since 2016. He revealed that the decision to step into entrepreneurship comes while he is still at the peak of his sporting career, a departure from the more common trend of athletes venturing into business only after retirement.

The javelin star said in a statement, “Over the last decade, our journey together has been one of growth, belief, and achievement. JSW Sports has played a defining role in my career, and I’ll always remain grateful for their support and vision. As we conclude this chapter, I carry forward the same values into the next phase of my journey.”

JSW Sports described the transition as one of deep respect and pride and highlighted the shared success of the partnership. Divyanshu Singh, CEO of JSW Sports, said, “Working with Neeraj has been an incredible experience... His success story reflects our shared philosophy of excellence and purpose. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together and wish him continued success in all his future pursuits.”

Under JSW Sports’ management, Chopra became the first Indian track and field athlete to win Olympic gold, achieved at the Tokyo Olympics, and went on to secure a world championship title and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, JSW Sports said.

By launching Vel Sports, Chopra aims to shape and manage an athletic career including his own commercial and professional trajectory from a leadership position, signalling a growing trend of athlete-led management ventures in Indian sport, he said.
