Haryana to Build INR 491 Crore Rai Sports University to Train Future Olympians
On Friday, the state’s Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam said that Haryana will develop the Sports University at Rai in Sonepat at an estimated cost of INR 491 crore. The announcement came during a review meeting with officials from the Sports Department, the university and the Public Works Department held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula. Gautam said the project will go beyond conventional academics, aiming to become a “laboratory for preparing future Olympians and international-level players”, with world-class sports grounds, training facilities, athlete accommodation and nutrition services in line with international standards.
The minister added that detailed drawings and designs for the modern sports infrastructure are being finalised and that the government has already released INR 114 crore through the Sports Department for repair and rejuvenation of sports stadiums across Haryana, which has already initiated work at several locations. Officials said additional resources will be allocated by the District Sports Council to further improve field grading, and Gautam directed deputy directors to conduct surprise stadium inspections at least twice a month.
Gautam also highlighted consistent achievements by daughters of the state at national and international sporting events, noting that sports nurseries play a crucial role in nurturing talent and that the Sports Department is working to provide better facilities in these nurseries.
Principal Secretary of the Sports Department Vijay Singh Dahiya, Director of Sports Parth Gupta and Sports University Vice-Chancellor Ashok Kumar were present in the meeting.
The minister’s remarks reflect Haryana’s broader emphasis on sports infrastructure and athlete development.
