Amid a severe shortage of principals in government senior secondary schools, the School Education Department has initiated a data-gathering exercise to speed up the promotion of directly recruited lecturers to principal posts.
According to recent figures, out of 1,927 sanctioned principal positions in Senior Secondary Schools, 984 are currently vacant. This means that nearly 51 per cent of the approved posts have not been filled.
In an official communication issued today, the Directorate of School Education (Secondary) instructed all District Education Officers (DEOs) to provide detailed information regarding ‘Group-B’ lecturers who were appointed through direct recruitment. The directive covers lecturers who are presently working in schools as well as those who are on deputation in other departments.
The shortage has significantly affected several districts, with some functioning with less than one-third of the required number of principals. It has clearly stated that any delay or negligence in furnishing the data will be the sole responsibility of the concerned DEO and the dealing assistant.
