In a heart-wrenching incident, a 20-year-old youth from Village Sukhpura in Barnala district, identified as Dilpreet Singh, allegedly took his own life after facing repeated rejections of his Canada visa application.
Dilpreet, the only son of his parents, reportedly ended his life by shooting himself with his uncle’s licensed double-barrel rifle. According to initial police reports, the young man was under immense psychological distress owing to multiple visa denials. He died instantly after firing both barrels into his head.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community. Dilpreet's sister and several cousins are already settled in Canada, and his family had high hopes for his migration as well. Neighbours described him as a quiet and ambitious young man who had long dreamt of joining his sister abroad.
Local police officials reached the scene shortly after the incident and have sent the body for a post-mortem. An investigation has been initiated, and statements from family members are being recorded.
“The youth was deeply disturbed by his visa rejections. We have taken possession of the firearm and are proceeding with the investigation as per protocol,” said a police officer from the Barnala jurisdiction.
The case once again highlights the mounting mental health pressures faced by youth in Punjab aspiring for overseas opportunities, particularly in countries like Canada. Many families invest heavily, emotionally and financially, in the migration process, often pushing youngsters into overwhelming stress when things don’t work out.
Authorities have urged families to be vigilant about the mental health of their children and stressed the importance of counselling and open communication during such challenging times.
