Imran Khan challenged verdict of the Trial court in the Islamabad High Court

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has delivered a significant development in the Toshakhana corruption case, as it stayed the conviction and three-year imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The decision was announced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.

This crucial decision follows a period of deliberation, during which the bench reserved its ruling after meticulously considering arguments presented by both sides regarding Imran Khan's petition challenging the trial court's verdict in the Toshakhana case. Notably, on August 5, a session court in Islamabad had sentenced Imran Khan, the 70-year-old leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party (PTI), to a three-year imprisonment term in connection with the Toshakhana corruption case.

Notably, The Toshakhana case revolves around allegations of improper dealings involving political gifts received by Imran Khan and his family during his tenure as prime minister, spanning from 2018 to 2022. The former cricketer-turned-politician acknowledged his involvement in the case and pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

In addition to the prison sentence, the session court had also imposed a five-year ban on Imran Khan's participation in political activities. This prohibition effectively barred him from contesting forthcoming elections and engaging in any political pursuits during the stipulated period. Responding to this verdict, Imran Khan opted to challenge the decision handed down by the lower court, thus initiating a legal process that led to the recent High Court intervention.
