Tensions Escalate as Five Eyes Nations Address the Allegations during G-20 Summit

The Already strained relations between India and Canada have intensified following the murder of Garamkhaiali Hardeep Singh Nijjar, with Canada pointing fingers at India for the crime. In a significant development, late Thursday, the US National Security Advisor (NSA), Jake Sullivan, publicly expressed his support for Canada's investigation into India's alleged involvement in the murder. He emphasized that no one should receive special immunity for such actions, regardless of their country of origin.

Sullivan made this announcement during a media briefing at the White House, affirming the United States' stance on holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions. The Financial Times has reported that the Five Eyes countries, including the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, conveyed their concerns regarding Canada's allegations during the recent G-20 summit. They also brought up the issue of Nijjar's tragic demise during discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Five Eyes alliance operates as an intelligence-sharing collaboration among the United States, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had accused Indian government agents of involvement in Nijjar's murder on September 18, a claim that India vehemently rejected, deeming it absurd.

Addressing the accusations made by Canada, Sullivan stated, "As soon as we heard publicly about the Canadian prime minister's allegations, we ourselves came forward publicly and expressed our deep concern about them." He reiterated the US commitment to upholding its core principles and the need for a thorough investigation and appropriate punishment for the culprits. While refuting claims of discord between the US and Canada, Sullivan underscored that they are in constant communication with their Canadian counterparts, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.
