India Canada Relations Latest News: Sanjay Kumar Verma, the recently recalled Indian High Commissioner to Canada, has made a bold claim that Khalistani extremists and terrorists are "deep assets" of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). In an interview with Canada-based CTV News', Verma accused the Canadian government of fostering these extremist elements.
"Khalistani extremists are being encouraged all the time. This is my allegation, and I also know that some of these Khalistani extremists and terrorists are deep assets of CSIS," Verma stated, clarifying that he did not have evidence to support his claims but was speaking from his perspective as a diplomat.
The envoy expressed frustration with the Canadian government, urging them to take his concerns seriously. "We only want the Canadian government of the day to understand my core concerns sincerely, rather than aligning with those who are challenging India's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.
Verma also emphasized that decisions regarding India's internal matters are the sole prerogative of Indian citizens, pointing out that many Khalistani activists in Canada hold Canadian citizenship. "No country should allow its citizens to challenge the sovereignty of another nation," he added.
Regarding allegations surrounding the assassination of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Verma dismissed them as "politically motivated" and lacking in evidence. He denied any involvement in directing or coercing individuals to gather intelligence on pro-Khalistani activists, stating, "I, as High Commissioner of India, had never done anything of that kind."
Verma further clarified that monitoring pro-Khalistani activities in Canada is a matter of national security for India, and any intelligence gathered by his team was done through open-source channels.
