Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed the media, confirming "very extensive damage" with casualties, building collapses, and fires reported. The aftermath of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake has left communities in central Japan in disarray, prompting a "race against time" for rescue operations. Videos shared by locals depict collapsed houses, cracked roads, and frightened residents seeking shelter amid the series of back-to-back tremors.

Tsunami Waves and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Following the seismic activity, waves measuring at least 1.2 meters hit Wajima, with smaller tsunamis reported in various regions. Although all tsunami warnings have been lifted, rescuers are tirelessly working to extract survivors from the rubble. Prime Minister Kishida emphasized the critical nature of the search and rescue mission, stating, "We have to race against time to search for and rescue victims of the disaster." A total of 62,000 people have been evacuated from their homes as the nation grapples with the aftermath of this catastrophic event.

Echoes of Past Tragedy

Japan, still haunted by the memory of the devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake in March 2011, which triggered a tsunami resulting in over 18,500 deaths and disappearances, now faces the urgent challenges posed by the recent seismic event. The 2011 disaster also led to the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown, marking Japan's worst post-war disaster and the most significant nuclear incident since Chernobyl.
