Union Cabinet Approves Establishment of South Asia Regional Centre of International Potato Center in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh Latest News: New Delhi, June 25, 2025: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the proposal from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for the establishment of the South Asia Regional Centre (CSARC) of the International Potato Center (CIP) in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
Welcoming the decision, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called the approval “truly commendable.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “The setting up of this centre in Uttar Pradesh, the largest potato-producing state in the country, will serve as a significant step towards connecting agriculture with technology, grains with research, and farmers with innovation.”
He added that the decision will not only enhance food and nutritional security, but also provide new direction to agriculture-based employment and farmer prosperity.
“On behalf of all farmer brothers in Uttar Pradesh, heartfelt thanks to the Hon’ble Prime Minister for this decision dedicated to farmer welfare,” he said.
According to an official government press release, the main objective of the centre is to enhance food and nutrition security, increase farmer’s income, and generate employment by improving productivity, post-harvest management, and value addition of potato and sweet potato crops.
The release further stated that the potato sector in India holds substantial potential for generating employment in various segments including production, processing, packaging, transportation, marketing, and value chains.
