The main accused, Sanchit Malhotra and Rohit Sahni, have been arrested, Ludhiana Police Commissioner R N Dhoke said. "The police have successfully exposed a criminal conspiracy that was hatched by the members of the Shiv Sena Hind to get police security and to create a rift between the Hindu and Sikh communities," the officer said.

In August, Malhotra lodged a complaint with the police claiming that Sahni and he had received threats from Sikh radicals. They had claimed that the Sikh radicals had thrown pamphlets carrying threat messages on their car.

The incident was caught on a CCTV camera, the police said. Last month, Malhotra again claimed that he had received death threats through a web-based messenger, which said he and Sahni would be killed within 10 days, they said.

The police probe revealed that Malhotra had engaged Maninder Singh alias Goldy and Prem Sagar for throwing the pamphlets. They sported turbans and threw pamphlets on the car, the police said. Malhotra's close friend Baljeet allegedly arranged and tied the turban for them, the police said.
