Agra Petha Units Struggle as LPG Shortage Impacts Production and Employment
Agra, long famous for its Petha sweets, is seeing some of its traditional sweet-making units struggle due to uncertainty over commercial LPG supplies. While a few factories continue limited production, others have halted operations entirely, putting the livelihoods of daily wage workers in jeopardy.
Traders say the industry, which depends heavily on gas, could face wider disruption if supplies are not stabilized soon. Families that rely on work in Petha units may see incomes drop, and local production could shrink, affecting both supply and sales.
Rajesh Agrawal, who leads the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Petha Kutir Association, expressed concern over the closures. He emphasized the urgency of ensuring consistent gas delivery to prevent the shutdown of remaining units and preserve Agra’s century-old sweet-making tradition.
District authorities, however, have stated there is no shortage. District Magistrate Arvind Malappa Bangari said the situation is being misrepresented and warned that those spreading false rumors would face action.
