He also accused the Congress party of working only for the “financial health” of its leaders' families.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday unveiled health projects worth Rs 2,092 crore across the poll-bound state of Assam at an official event in Guwahati.

Speaking at the event, Shah said that Assam’s healthcare system was in shambles 10 years ago, alleging that the Indian National Congress only focused on its own interests during its decades-long rule in the state.

“10 years ago, the health system in the entire north-east wasn't working. Congress, which ruled for decades, only thought about its own family,” said Shah.

He also accused the Congress party of working only for the “financial health” of its leaders’ families.

He added that it was BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who brought the state’s health sector at par with states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The Home Minister also alleged that the Congress party “pocketed” Rs

150 crore per year from Assam’s healthcare budget for 15 years.

Attacking Rahul Gandhi, Shah said, “No Indian supports Rahul Gandhi's acts of 'defaming' country in his bid to oppose BJP and PM Modi.”

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, also addressing the gathering at the event, said that the state currently has 12 cancer hospitals and that the goal of establishing a total of 17 hospitals will soon be achieved.

“"You all must remember that before COVID, Ratan Tata had come to Assam in the presence of the Home Minister and the Home Minister had told Ratan Tata that you should build a Cancer Hospital in every state of the North East. Then Assam saw a bigger dream,” Sarma said.

He added that an MoU was signed between the state government and Tata Trusts, with each party contributing 50% to build 17 cancer hospitals across the state, including facilities for chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

He further said that the state currently has 12 such hospitals, while the remaining ones will be completed soon.

“Today, I feel that no other states in the government sector have such a network of Cancer Hospitals as Assam has today,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India is set to announce the Assembly poll dates for states going to elections at 4 pm today.
