The decision comes two days ahead of the next hearing in the ongoing case against the detention in the Supreme Court.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday, reacting to the Centre’s decision to revoke the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, remarked that the government not having an answer for the next hearing in the Supreme Court is the reason for his release.

"Sonam Wangchuk is a very prestigious person,” Baghel said, noting that “he has done numerous works that brought prestige to the country.”

“To suppress the movement he led there, a conspiracy was hatched to tarnish his prestige, and he was arrested under the NSA.

Now, because the government has to respond in two days and they don't have an answer, they are releasing him,” he added.
Baghel further remarked, “There is no evidence against him, yet by keeping such a prestigious person in jail, the BJP has committed a sin."

The Centre earlier stated that it has decided to revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, saying it was done to foster “fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders” and to further this objective.

“The Government has been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh with a view to addressing the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region. However, the prevailing atmosphere of bandhs and protests has been detrimental to the peace-loving character of the society and has adversely affected various sections of the community, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists and overall economy,” the Centre said.

The decision comes two days ahead of the hearing in the ongoing case against the detention in the Supreme Court. It also comes days after the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance called for a mega public rally on the 16th of March.

According to PTI, Sonam Wangchuk, who was lodged in a jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, has been released following the Centre’s announcement.
