Chandigarh: The Commission of Inquiry, set up to inquire into several incidents of sacrilege in Punjab, will visit Sangrur and Malerkotla to record statements of witnesses in connection with the desecration of religious texts.

"The Commission is scheduled to visit Sangrur on April 18 and Malerkotla on April 25. The Commission will visit the places of incidents of sacrilege in Sangrur as well as Malerkotkla," according to an official release.

The Commission, headed by Justice Ranjit Singh (Retd), is going to record the statements of all the witnesses desirous of making statements during its visit to these places, it said.

The Commission has so far visited the places of incidents of sacrilege in SAS Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Patiala, Ropar, SBS Nagar, Hoshiarpur, Barnala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Moga.

The one-man Commission was formed by the Congress government in April last year, a month after it came to power in the state.

The Commission was tasked with looking into the cases of sacrilege, including an incident in Kotakpura in Faridkot where two persons died.

The previous SAD-BJP government in Punjab had appointed the Justice Zora Singh Commission to look into the incidents of sacrilege. Its report was dismissed by the Congress government.  PTI
