Tech-Driven Safety: Punjab Police and NHAI to Use ATMS for Real-Time Highway Monitoring
The Punjab Police and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) held a high-level coordination meeting on Wednesday to enhance their joint efforts regarding highway safety and enforcement.
Chaired by Special DGP (Traffic and Road Safety) A.S. Rai and NHAI Regional Officer Rakesh Kumar, the session focused on the effective implementation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) across existing and upcoming highway corridors.
According to Special DGP Rai, the two agencies focused on the effective use of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) on existing and upcoming highway corridors, including the newly commissioned Kurali-Kharar-Mohali bypass. He said that enforcement protocols will be integrated with ATMS data to allow for real-time monitoring, automatic detection of violations, and better-coordinated incident responses.
The agencies will upgrade traffic aid posts at key toll plazas and strategic non-toll locations to ensure public assistance. The meeting reviewed the integration of emergency helplines 1033 and 112 to unify ambulance and highway patrol deployment. Special DGP Rai noted that this would reduce the duplication of resources.
The NHAI committed to resolving congestion issues near Chandigarh and Rajpura within the next two to three months. Additionally, both departments will conduct regular joint evaluations of "black spots", supported by data analytics from the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, to improve commuter safety.
