
The 34th edition of the Indian Oil SERVO Surjit Hockey (Men and Women) Tournament will begin at the local Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium. Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary will inaugurate the hockey tournament function.
A Hockey tournament is organized every year in Jalandhar by the
Surjit Hockey Society in memory of the
former skipper of Indian Hockey Team
Surjit Singh Randhawa.
Surjit Singh Randhawa lost his life in a car accident near
Jalandhar on January 7th, 1984 while fighting hard for up-liftment of
the National Game of the country.
Deputy Commissioner Varinder Sharma who is the president of the Surjit Hockey Society said that the tournament would be played on league-cum-knock out basis. All the 12 teams which are participating in the tournament in Men Section have been divided into four pools.
The winner team of each pool would qualify for the semi finals scheduled to be held on October 30.
In the Women section 8 teams are participating in the tournament which are divided into two groups of 4 team each. Top teams of the each pool will meet each other in finals held on October 29.
Iqbal Singh Sandhu, ADC of Ludhiana said that this year many attractive prizes are there to attract the spectators. The spectators would be given lucky coupons and get attractive prizes like an Alto Car, Motorcycles, Refrigerator, LCDs for which a lucky draw would be held on the finale.
Adding on, he said that
the matches will be played under flood lights in the stadium and entry will be free of cost and three matches will be played daily.
