Severe Calamity Strikes 19 Districts of Punjab, Including Patiala, Prompting MP Praneet Kaur to Seek Special Assistance

PATIALA/DELHI: In the wake of devastating floods that have wreaked havoc in Punjab, former External Affairs Minister and Member of Parliament from Patiala, Praneet Kaur, has urgently reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking immediate relief for the severely affected people in the state.

In her heartfelt letter to the Prime Minister, MP Patiala highlighted the grim situation caused by continuous floods, which have resulted in widespread destruction across 19 districts of Punjab, with Patiala being one of the worst affected. The calamity has left nearly 500 villages in ruins, and a staggering 1.25 lakh acres of farmland submerged under deep waters. The repercussions extend to Patiala city, various towns, and numerous settlements within the constituency, all deeply impacted by the floods.

Describing the extent of damage to crops, she expressed, "The saffron crop has been completely destroyed, and the river Ghaggar has deposited more than three feet of sand and silt all over the fields, causing losses to paddy and other crops. With limited opportunities for replanting and immediate reclamation of the lands being unfeasible, significant efforts and funds are required. Moreover, the loss of houses and livestock has only exacerbated the desperation faced by the affected populace."

In her appeal to the Prime Minister, MP Patiala requested a one-time special assistance package for Punjab, acknowledging the central government's contribution of Rs. 218.40 crores towards various flood relief measures. However, she stressed the need for an additional lump sum assistance to be directly provided to farmers through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.

Furthermore, the MP advocated for special provisions to be considered for agricultural laborers and economically weaker sections who have suffered tremendous losses, losing their homes and belongings in the deluge.
