Rising fuel costs are set to make Air India and Air India Express flights more expensive for travelers from March 12. The airline group announced a new fuel surcharge affecting both domestic and international routes, citing sharp increases in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Domestic flyers and passengers traveling within the South Asian region will now pay an extra 399 rupees per ticket. For international travelers, charges will vary depending on the destination. West Asian region flights will carry a 10 US dollar surcharge, African routes 90 US dollars, and Southeast Asia, including Singapore, 60 US dollars.

The phased rollout aims to manage the financial impact of rising jet fuel costs without abruptly affecting all routes at once. The airline said the surcharge is necessary to offset the increased operational expenses caused by the current geopolitical situation.

Other major Indian carriers, including IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air, have not yet announced changes to their fuel surcharge policies.
