The government added that Basic Recruit Training is being conducted routinely in accordance with the annual training plan.

There are 93,139 vacancies in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles (AR) as of January 1, 2026, according to a written reply by Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, in the Rajya Sabha.

In the reply dated March 11, 2025, the government said the forces are discharging all their duties in a highly professional manner through optimal utilisation of available resources.

The information was provided in response to questions raised in the House by Ashok Kumar Mittal, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Mittal asked whether large-scale vacancies persist in the CAPFs and, if so, sought details. He also asked whether such vacancies have adversely affected law enforcement, internal security and disaster response capabilities, and if not, the reasons for it.

In another question, he asked whether recruitment delays and training bottlenecks had been identified and reviewed, and sought details on the timeline and action plan to address manpower shortages in internal security forces.

In response, the government said that “filling up of vacancies is a continuous process.”

“The Ministry takes earnest steps to fill up the vacancies expeditiously through the Union Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, and the forces concerned. The Government has taken, inter alia, the following steps against the available vacancies in CAPFs and AR,” the reply stated.

The government further said that directions have been issued to all CAPFs and the Assam Rifles to undertake recruitment against vacant posts in non-General Duty cadres in a time-bound manner.

Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for yearly recruitment to the post of Constable (General Duty).

“For coordinating recruitment to General Duty posts, a nodal force has been nominated on a long-term basis for recruitment in the ranks of Constable (General Duty), Sub-Inspector (GD) and Assistant Commandant (General Duty),” the reply added.

The government also highlighted that Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is being used during the Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET) for Constable (GD) and other direct recruitment examinations in CAPFs and Assam Rifles.

Further, the government said regular meetings of Departmental Promotion Committees (DPCs) are being conducted to fill promotional vacancies.

It also noted that the time taken for medical examinations — Detailed Medical Examination (DME) and Review Medical Examination (RME) — has been reduced to expedite the recruitment process.

Additionally, cut-off marks for shortlisting candidates for Constable (GD) have been lowered in order to ensure a sufficient number of candidates, especially in categories where shortfalls have been observed.

The government added that Basic Recruit Training is being conducted routinely in accordance with the annual training plan.
