Chandigarh: Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim faces fresh legal troubles as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a revision petition against him in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The case, which revolves around allegations of inciting religious sentiments, challenges an earlier decision by the sessions judge. The court has scheduled the hearing for November 7.
The Controversy
The issue dates back to 2007 when Gurmeet Ram Rahim allegedly impersonated Shri Guru Gobind Singh, sparking widespread outrage. The matter was brought to Shri Akal Takht Sahib, who then ordered a boycott of the Dera chief and his followers. The SGPC had filed a petition, accusing Ram Rahim of provoking religious sentiments.
In 2015, however, the Bathinda District Court dismissed the summons related to the petition. In its latest move, the SGPC argued in its revision petition that at the time the summons was canceled, Ram Rahim had not yet been convicted of any major crimes. Since then, he has been found guilty in high-profile murder and rape cases. Given this new context, the SGPC has called for a fresh hearing.
The High Court has not yet issued any notices in the case, but further action is expected following the hearing next month.
