2 Child Beggars Rescued; Efforts Intensified to Make Punjab Child-Begging-Free Under Project JIWANJYOT News: In an effort to make Punjab free from child begging, two children found begging in Faridkot were rescued, the Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, said in a press release on October 12, citing Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stated that she personally noticed the two children near the Faridkot railway crossing and immediately informed the District Child Protection Team.
The two children have been shifted to children’s home for care and protection following the verification of their details.
The minister stated that the Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, has further intensified its efforts to make the state free from child begging.
Dr. Baljit Kaur lauded the efforts of all District Child Protection Units across the state, appreciating their prompt and dedicated response in implementing the government’s child protection policy and ensuring the success of Project JIWANJYOT. She said the teams are playing a vital role in protecting the rights of children and transforming lives at the grassroots level.
She further added that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision is to ensure that no child is seen begging on the streets of Punjab.
The Punjab Government is committed to rehabilitating such children and connecting them with education through Project JIWANJYOT, which has already started yielding encouraging results, the minister said.
She called child begging not only a social evil but also a violation of child rights.
The Cabinet Minister issued a stern warning to parents and gangs involved in exploiting children for begging, stating that strict action will be taken against anyone found indulging in such activities.
She appealed to the citizens of Punjab to avoid giving alms and instead inform the Child Helpline Number 1098 whenever they come across a begging child, to help the government eradicate this social menace from the state.
Child begging has become very common, depriving children of formal education and pushing them further into poverty and hardship. The crime is prevalent in other states as well. Only collective action can help bring down the numbers.
