The voting process will continue till 6:00 pm
JALANDHAR: Voting for the Lok Sabha by-elections in Jalandhar district is underway today. The Polling commenced at 8:00 am on Wednesday (May 10) amid tight security arrangements. People are reaching polling booths at various locations to cast their votes.
Notably, The voting process will continue till 6 pm. 16,21,759 voters belonging to 9 Vidhan Sabha Constituencies Jalandhar North, West, Central, Kent, Adampur, Kartarpur, Phillaur, Nakodar and Shahkot Vidhan Sabha Constituencies under Jalandhar Lok Sabha Constituency will cast their votes and the fate of all the 19 candidates contesting the elections will be decided. As per the reports, In Jalandhar, 5.21 percent voting has taken place till 9:00 am. 10 percent voting turnout was recorded till 10 am in Adampur constituency.
Aam Aadmi Party candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku along with his family paid obeisance at Guru Ravidas Maharaj Ji temple before casting his vote at Indo-German Senior Secondary School in Basti Danishmandan. Sushil Rinku said, "All the people are supporting me. Regarding the allegations of booth capturing by the Congress, Sushil Rinku said that no such incident has come to light so far."
Congress leader and former Punjab minister Pargat Singh also cast his vote. After casting his vote, he claimed that he is sure of a Congress victory in by-polls. MLA Raman Arora cast vote at the polling booth and said, "There is a lot of enthusiasm among the people regarding voting. Voting is our constitutional right. I appeal everyone that people must cast their vote."
Congress MLA Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia from Shahkot casted his vote in Patti Shala Nagar (Malsian) and Congress candidate Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary also cast her valuable vote in Jalandhar. Speaking on this occasion, she said, "Today is a very fortunate day and everyone has worked hard for this day. Jalandhar residents will give their decision today."
Notably, The Aam Admi Party has fielded former Congress MLA Sushil Kumar Rinku while Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal as candidate in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha By-elections. Former Late MP Santokh Chaudhary's wife Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary is fielded from Congress party.
Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C informed that there are as many as 16,21,759 electorates including 8,44,904 Males, 7,76,855 Females, 10,286 Persons with Disability, 1850 Service Electors, 73 Overseas Electors and 41 Transgender. There are 19 candidates in the fray including 15 Males and 4 Females. 1972 polling stations have been established and webcasting of all the polling stations is being done. The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the passing away of Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary.
