RITES Submits Comprehensive Reports, Setting the Stage for a Transformative Metro Network in Tricity

CHANDIGARH: The Ambitious metro line project in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula has taken a significant step forward with the submission of the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES). A crucial meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Chandigarh Administrator Banwari Lal Purohit's advisor Dharmapal, where the comprehensive reports were presented. Representatives from Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana governments were actively involved in discussions concerning the metro project's intricate details. The project is set to be executed in three phases, emphasizing extensive coverage across the tricity.

According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the metro network's total length in the first phase will span an impressive 79.5 kilometers. The initial line is proposed to connect New Chandigarh to Panchkula, initiating a significant expansion of the metro infrastructure. Subsequent lines will further enhance connectivity, encompassing key areas such as Rock Garden to Sector 17 Bus Stand to Zirakpur Bus Stand, Mohali International Airport, and Anaj Mandi Chowk to Transport Light Sector 26.

The estimated cost of the Chandigarh metro line project is approximately 13,000 crore rupees. In a joint endeavor to facilitate this transformative venture, the central government has committed to covering 60 percent of the expenses, with the remaining 40 percent being shared by Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab. Notably, Haryana and Punjab have already allocated funds for the preparation of the DPR, reflecting a collective commitment towards realizing a modern and efficient metro network.

Efforts are now underway to expedite the meticulous planning and preparation of the final report, slated to be completed by December 2023. The forthcoming metro network holds immense promise, aiming to redefine public transportation in the tricity and foster sustainable urban development for the growing populace.
