Sukhbir Singh Badal in a Soup Before Lok Sabha Polls With most of the senior leaders breaking away from party, the road seems tough for Sukhbir Badal The upcoming Lok Sabha elections are a matter of saving the little reputation Akali Dal (Badal) has left in the state. The last elections it fought saw Akali Dal being ousted from power rather humiliatingly. The party has a lot to prove in these elections, but things seem bleak.
Recent developments have seen the party losing three members of Parliament, which signals the difficulty for it to retain its present seats too. Lok Sabha MPs Sher Singh Ghubaya from Firozepur and Ranjit Singh Brahmpura from Khadoor Sahib, and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa have quit the party. These three leaders have a great hold in their respective electoral constituencies. So much so, that it is deemed nearly impossible for any new Akali candidate to even give these three a competition.
The recent exit of Sher Singh Ghubaya is a big jolt for Akali Dal. Ghubaya belongs to the Rai Sikh community, and the constituency which he is from, Firozepur is a Rai Sikh majority area. No party can win there without the Rai Sikh community’s support, and that is what Sher Singh Ghubaya enjoys.
The party anyways is at a great disadvantage after its leaders being named in the Sacrilege cases and in the Shooting cases. It remains to be seen whom the party president Sukhbir Singh Badal choses to contest elections from the above mentioned three constituencies, as the said three ex-Akali leaders have their strongholds there.
