Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Slams Centre Over US Deportation Issue in Assembly latest news: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday strongly criticized the Centre over the recent deportation of illegal immigrants from the United States, claiming that the Union government was trying to project Punjab in a negative light.
Speaking during the special session of the Punjab Assembly, CM Mann questioned why all three deportation flights landed in Amritsar, despite carrying a mix of immigrants from different states.
"Three flights arrived in India, and all three landed in Amritsar. These flights came via Gujarat because the airspace of Pakistan and Afghanistan could not be used for military aircraft. However, the headcount of Gujaratis and Haryanavis on these flights was more than that of Punjabis," Mann stated.
He accused the Centre of deliberately choosing Amritsar as the destination to create a misleading narrative. “They wanted to make headlines that flights carrying illegal immigrants landed in Amritsar, making it seem like only Punjabis were involved. This is a clear attempt to malign Punjab,” he added.
Mann also pointed out the Centre’s double standards in handling international arrivals, highlighting that Sheikh Hasina's military aircraft was allowed to land at Hindon Air Force Base when she sought political asylum. Furthermore, he criticized PM Narendra Modi for meeting Donald Trump at a time when Punjabi immigrants were being deported in handcuffs from the US.
"Is this what you give to Punjab? This is intolerable. Punjabis don’t beg, we demand our rights," Mann asserted, sending a strong message to the Central government over its alleged discriminatory actions.
The issue of illegal immigration and deportation has been a contentious topic, with Punjab being one of the states most affected by youth migration in search of better opportunities abroad. The Chief Minister’s remarks have added fuel to the growing debate over how deported immigrants are treated and represented in national discourse.
