Congress Spokesperson on Modi-Trump Call: PM Should Brief Parliament or All-Party Meeting; Tharoor Comments
Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate demands PM to Brief Modi-Trump Call latest news: Indian National Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate on Monday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi brief Parliament or convene an all-party meeting to clarify the details of his recent telephonic conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding mediation efforts during the India-Pakistan conflict.
Speaking to ANI, Shrinate said,"The PM spoke on the phone (to US President Trump) and the government said that the PM gave a befitting reply (to President Trump). But a few hours later, Trump, for the 15th time, says that we stopped the war (India-Pakistan tension) and hyphenates Narendra Modi to Asim Munir.”
"We cannot see our country being disrespected like this. Everything Modi Ji said in that telephone conversation, he should come and say in the all-party meeting or Parliament...” she added.
The phone call between PM Modi and President Trump took place on Wednesday, following a request from the U.S. side after their scheduled meeting at the G7 Summit in Canada was cancelled due to Trump’s early departure.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later clarified that India has never accepted, does not accept, and will never accept mediation on issues involving Pakistan. “On this matter, there is complete political unanimity,” he said.
According to Misri, PM Modi told President Trump that no discussions took place about a India-U.S. trade deal or any kind of U.S. mediation between India and Pakistan following the recent military escalation. “The talks concerning de-escalation were held directly between India and Pakistan through existing military channels — and only upon Pakistan’s request,” he noted.
Commenting on the matter, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “Mediation implies equivalence — and there is no equivalence between terrorists and their victims... Where there is no equivalence, there can be no mediation.”
He also said that India made it clear that if Pakistan chose to attack, India would respond to that, adding “This message was given not just to Pakistan but to the World”
He stated that India never needed persuading to stop the conflict with Pakistan followed by the April 22, Pahalgam terror attack.
“We welcome any pressure the Americans may have put on Pakistan, but we did not ask for it. We did not request anyone's mediation... It was fully understood when we explained this in our delegation meetings (in the USA). I can assure you that what the Prime Minister has reported, is the same message that we ourselves had given. I personally spoke to the USA Vice President. We have been diplomatic and correct in not saying this publicly, but today I can reveal it. There is no doubt at any level of the US Administration where India stands on this matter," Tharoor stated.
Congress MP Vijayakumar alias Vijay Vasanth also commented on the matter and stated, "today, Trump again said that it was he who initiated the ceasefire, so the Prime Minister should give clarity on this."
