Rahul Gandhi claimed that even PM Modi, didn’t expect to win the large number of seats BJP ultimately secured.
Rahul Gandhi on Lok Sabha Elections 2024 During US visit: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns about the fairness of India's recent general elections, alleging that the polls were heavily skewed in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking at Georgetown University during his four-day visit to the United States, Gandhi asserted that the election was not fought on a level playing field and that it undermined Prime Minister Narendra Modi's political image.
Gandhi stated, "In a fair election, I don't believe the BJP would come close to 240 seats. They had significant financial advantages, and our bank accounts were frozen. The Election Commission acted in their favor, and the campaign was structured to push Modi's agenda with varying strategies across states. It wasn’t a free election—it was controlled."
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha also detailed how the Congress faced challenges during the election. "At one point, our treasurer informed us that the bank accounts were frozen. Despite this, we fought and managed to damage the narrative of Modi's India," he added.
Gandhi claimed that even Prime Minister Modi, during the campaign, didn’t expect to win the large number of seats BJP ultimately secured.
During his U.S. visit, Rahul Gandhi has also engaged with the Indian diaspora in Dallas and plans to meet U.S. lawmakers and officials in Washington, D.C.
