RSS was Founded in 1925 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. According to PIB, “the RSS was established as a volunteer-based organization with the goal of fostering cultural awareness, discipline, service, and social responsibility among citizens.”

It said, “RSS is a unique people-nurtured movement for national reconstruction. Its rise has been seen as a response to centuries of foreign rule, with its continuing growth attributed to the emotional resonance of its vision of India’s national glory, rooted in Dharma.”

PIB in the press release stated that RSS emphasizes on “patriotism and national character formation.”

“A core emphasis of the Sangh is on patriotism and national character formation. It seeks to instil devotion to the motherland, discipline, self-restraint, courage, and heroism. The Sangh’s ultimate goal is the “Sarvangeena Unnati” (all-round development) of India, to which every Swayamsevak dedicates himself,” it said.

It further stated that the organization has “played a significant role in education, health, social welfare, and disaster relief.”

“RSS volunteers have actively participated in relief and rehabilitation efforts during natural disasters, including floods, earthquakes, and cyclones. In addition, various affiliated organizations of the RSS have contributed to empowering youth, women, and farmers, promoting public participation, and strengthening local communities,” it added.

BJP-led Indian Govt. Lifted decades-old ban on Govt. Employees Participating In RSS Activities, in 2024

The Centre lifted a ban on government employees taking part in Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities, in July 2024, according to News on AIR, and the ban was removed by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions.

The ban was imposed in November 1966 during the rule of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, it said.

According to the news portal, BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya, in a post on X, stated the ‘unconstitutional order issued 58 years ago, in 1966, imposing a ban on government employees taking part in RSS activities has been withdrawn by the Modi government.”

Asaduddin Owaisi along other oppostition leaders had criticized the ban, stating, “This office memo purportedly shows that the government has lifted the ban on govt employees participating in RSS activities. If true, this is against India’s integrity and unity. The ban on RSS exists because it had originally refused to accept the constitution, the national flag & the national anthem. Every RSS member takes an oath that puts Hindutva above the nation. No civil servant can be loyal to the nation if he is a member of RSS.”

Similarly, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik had expressed shock over the government’s decision to lift the decades-old ban on government employees associating with the RSS and its activities, saying, “I cannot believe it. It seems utterly shocking."

However, RSS’s Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh, Sunil Ambekar, had welcomed the government decision, stating, “Decision of the Government is appropriate and will strengthen the democratic system of Bharat.”
