NCW Member Alleges West Bengal Police Obstructed Access to Rape Survivor’s Family and Crime Scene
NCW Slams Police In Law College Rape Probe Latest news update: National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar, who reached South Calcutta Law College earlier today on June 29 following the alleged gangrape of a law student on campus, has accused the West Bengal Police of obstructing the NCW team from visiting the crime scene and meeting the victim’s family.
Speaking to ANI, Majumdar said, “The police are not letting us to meet the victim or her family, nor are they letting us to see the crime scene or take photographs.”
She further alleged that the police are deliberately hiding the victim's family and warned that these developments would be included in the NCW's official report.
“The police do not want us to meet the victim's family. The police are saying that they don't know where the family is. The Deputy Commissioner, the nodal officer of the case, does not know where the victim is. They are not at home. They have been hidden somewhere... We will include everything in the report...
Majumdar also questioned the sudden urgency shown by the police after receiving a letter from the NCW.
“After receiving the Commission’s letter yesterday, the police completed all formalities in a single day. And now, they claim they don’t know where the victim and her family are. This is ridiculous. We will take every action necessary,” she warned.
On the visit of NCW member Archana Majumdar, West Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya remarked, "Why did the Women's Commission not go to other places? Are there no atrocities there? If you have to go, go everywhere. You should go to Manipur, Odisha. It is an independent institution; it should be independent, but it is not working that way."
"I have nothing to say on Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra, our party has already commented on it," she added.
Earlier, Majumdar had said that the NCW team would be visiting the survivor’s family in Champahati to assess the current situation, provide support, and inquire about the progress of the investigation.
“We spoke to the officer-in-charge, who informed us that our first visit would be to the girl’s home in Champahati. We plan to meet her father, mother, or any legal guardian to understand what actually happened, whether timely police protection was provided, and whether the family needs further assistance,” she told ANI.
