West Bengal Law Student Gangrape Case: NCW Visits Survivor’s Family, 4 Arrested, SIT Formed
West Bengal Law Student Gangrape Case Latest news update: Kolkata, June 30, Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), on Sunday visited South Calcutta Law College, where a law student was allegedly gangraped on the college premises on June 25.
Three men, Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay were arrested earlier in connection with the case. On Saturday, the college security guard, identified as Pinaki Banerjee, was also arrested. All four are currently in police custody till July 1.
A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the supervision of ACP Pradip Kumar Ghoshal to investigate the matter. The area where the incident allegedly took place has been sealed by police.
NCW to Review Investigation, Support Family
Speaking to ANI, Archana Majumdar said the NCW team would be visiting the survivor's family in Champahati to assess the current situation, offer support, and inquire about the status of the investigation.
“We have spoken to the officer-in-charge, who informed us that the first visit will be to the girl’s house in Champahati. We will speak with her father, mother, or any legal guardian. We will ask about what actually happened, whether timely and proper police protection was provided, and if the family needs further assistance,” Majumdar said.
She also noted that progress in the investigation and medical examination appeared faster than in previous cases.
“Earlier, medical and legal procedures used to take several days. But this time, we received the FIR and the medical report within a day. This shows that if police work without political interference, everything can proceed promptly.”
Majumdar raised concern over the increasing crimes against women in West Bengal. Referring to a recent incident in Kalyani, she said, “Just three days ago, we were in Kalyani for a public hearing about another case where a man from another community entered a house in broad daylight, raped a woman, and escaped. The police reportedly took no action. Crimes against women are being suppressed in West Bengal, and we are here to ensure their safety and support.”
As per a Hindustan Times report, the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, was formerly the president of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth wing at the college. He currently practices as a criminal lawyer at the Alipore court.
Details from the investigation indicate that while Mishra allegedly raped the survivor, the other two accused stood guard and assisted in the crime. The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:50 PM on June 25.
In response to the accused’s alleged association with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), its state president Trinankur Bhattacharjee stated, “I demand the strictest punishment for those found guilty. The accused may have been associated with TMCP in the past, but he never held any important position. This is not TMCP’s responsibility.”
Similar Incident Earlier This Year
This case comes nearly six months after the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, in which Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, brutally raped and murdered a postgraduate medical student. He was recently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee.
