"And a spineless, communal media serving it up in another of its spectacular self goals."
Sonam Wangchuk Pakistan Conference Controversy: Journalist Nirupama Subramanian, who also attended the same conference on Climate Change that Sonam Wangchuk attended in Pakistan earlier this year, stated that the conference was about “climate change and how South Asians had to do something about it together and that ‘Wangchuk had nothing but praise for Prime Minister Modi.’”
Nirupama Subramanian said in a post on X, “Among the many charges that the govt has levelled against Ladakh climate change activist #SonamWangchuk in connection with the recent violence in #Ladakh is that he attended a conference in Pakistan organised by Dawn media group and that shows how last week’s deadly protests were incited by him with foreign help. I attended the conference too.”
“It was about climate change and how South Asians had to do something about it together as we shared mountain ranges, river systems and coastlines. And let me tell you that in his presentation, Wangchuk, who has been a supporter of the BJP for its doing away of Article 370, and making Ladakh a separate UT, had nothing but praise for Prime Minister Modi,” she continued.
“No one in the audience seemed to know how famous he was. When Sonam was introduced by the moderator, there was no mention of his political activism at all. It was only after I mentioned to my friend and journalist @HamidMirPAK about the Three Idiots link that he alerted his network and TV crews started buzzing around him and he was mobbed by youngsters,” she further stated in her post.
She strongly criticized the government for turning a peaceful protest into ‘a pit of disappointment and anger,’ and for allegedly “casually shifting the blame” for the government’s “own acts of omission and commission" in Ladakh on Sonam Wangchuk.

“This whole campaign about his alleged anti-nationalism has been drummed up by a government that failed to foresee how it was turning a peaceful little place into a pit of disappointment and anger, and casually shifting the blame for its own acts of omission and commission in Ladakh on this guy. And a spineless, communal media serving it up in another of its spectacular self goals. I wish I could use some choice expletives but I will confine myself to this: cynical, self serving and stupid beyond belief,” Nirupama Subramanian said in her post on Sunday (28 Sep. 2025).
