SC issues notice to Centre, Punjab, and Chandigarh over delay in Balwant Singh Rajoana's mercy plea

Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convicted terrorist associated with Babbar Khalsa, is currently on death row.

Supreme Court on  Balwant Singh Rajoana's mercy plea: The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre, the Punjab government, and the Chandigarh administration regarding the prolonged delay in deciding the mercy petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.

Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convicted terrorist associated with Babbar Khalsa, is currently on death row. His petition, filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, seeks the commutation of his death sentence, citing an 'extraordinary' delay of over one year and four months in resolving his mercy plea, which is still pending with the President of India.

In a fresh notice, a bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices BR Gavai, Prashant Kumar Mishra, and KV Viswanathan, directed the Centre, Punjab government, and Chandigarh administration to submit their responses within four weeks.
