November 25 Public Holiday Alert: Honoring Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 350th Martyrdom Anniversary
In Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and several other northern states, a public holiday has been declared on Tuesday, 25th November, 2025. It is to mark the 350th Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru. Earlier the day was listed as a restricted holiday, but now it has been elevated to a full public holiday. Government offices and schools are closed across the capital.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the holiday on X. She stated that, “May Guru Sahib’s timeless message of courage, compassion, and freedom of faith continue to guide and inspire us in our collective journey ahead.” The observance emphasises the Guru’s ultimate sacrifice in 1675 to protect the religious freedom of people under Mughal rule.
All Delhi government offices, public schools, colleges, and autonomous institutions will remain closed, observing the holiday. However, essential services will continue: hospitals and emergency services will operate as usual, and public transport, including buses, taxis, and the Delhi Metro, will run without disruption. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s regional holiday schedule, banks, both private and public, will remain open. Customers can complete their financial transactions seamlessly.
The celebration extends beyond administrative closures. The 350th anniversary is being observed with a three-day commemoration at the Red Fort, Delhi, from November 23 to 25, alongside state-led ceremonies in Anandpur Sahib and other historic locations. Indian Railways has also announced two special train services for devotees that connect Patna Sahib and Old Delhi to facilitate travel for participants in the events.
Local communities and religious organisations are organising seva camps, spiritual gatherings, and kirtans to promote the Guru’s teachings of courage, compassion, and selfless service. Schools in the NCR, including Noida and Ghaziabad, have also been directed to postpone outdoor competitions and sports activities. It is both in observance of Shaheedi Diwas and in compliance with safety advisories due to air quality concerns.
November 25 is a day of cultural engagement and community participation. It is a day to remember the Guru’s teachings through attending ceremonies, seva activities and learning about his legacy that allows people to honour the values of justice, freedom and equality.
